red bridges (PhotoHunt)

The PhotoHunt theme for this week is “bridge.” Like the reflections theme that first enticed to me to play along with this game, this is another theme that I am quite drawn to. I have many photos of (or with) bridges in my photo library, so it was hard to choose which to present.

In the end (or perhaps the beginning?) I chose to start with this photo, which reflects my fondness for reflections in photos, as well as my fondness for bridges. (You see how I like to run on with a theme? Just like that time when I ran on with spoons and reflections.)

This photo has the added appeal of showing the bright light and vibrant colors of a late summer day, which contrast so vividly with the colors of the landscape around my home right now. We are in the midst of a long, icy, snowbound sort of winter, which offers the sort of stark gray and white palette that can leave the eyes craving a splash of color.

And to warm and brighten things up a bit more, I offer photos of Phoebe, looking regal as she is wheeled (along with her Bunny-Bunny-Bunny) across the steeply sloping bridge.

This arched bridge is in a park in central Massachusetts, but it is clearly modelled after Japanese bridges, such as this one, in a park in Nara, Japan.

(The kimono-clad women in the photo are some linguists or other speech researchers attending a conference in 2004. It was during a special kimono-trying event, mind you, and should not be taken to reflect the standard style of dress of speech researchers attending conferences.)

And lest it appear that all red Japanese bridges are fancifully arched and primarily decorative, I offer up exhibit C, a very different red bridge which I came across (and walked across) in Kyoto, Japan. While this bridge is much more sturdy and utilitarian, I still appreciated its lines as well as its color.

Would you call a cow furry? (PhotoHunt)

This week’s PhotoHunt theme is “furry.” Cows aren’t the first animals to come to mind for the term, but I like this photo, and I’m on a roll with the bovines for the Year of the Ox.

The PhotoHunt theme this week is “aftermath.” For more interpretations of the theme, go check out tnchick’s post.

(I admit that, once again, I struggled with this theme. I almost went with “afterbath” instead.)

(Be thankful I didn’t go with “afterbirth.”)

photohunter7iqThis week’s PhotoHunt theme was “wide,” which didn’t give me a lot of specific ideas. I did, however, welcome the chance to dig through some of my more recent travel photos.

While I did find a few wide candidates to choose from, I also noticed that I tend to gravitate towards photos of the narrow. (I’m not sure what that says about my personality. Maybe it says more about my camera.)

picking a favorite (PhotoHunt)

photohunter7iqThis week’s PhotoHunt theme is “favorite,” which left me at a bit of a loss for interpretation. I’m not much good at picking favorites, in general. I’m more likely to give a list of 5 or 10 (or 100) of something, and say they are “among my favorites.”

Anyhow, I somewhat arbitrarily picked this recent photo (which I’d rated in my iPhoto Library as a “favorite”) as it seemed somewhat iconic of picking a favorite color. (Phoebe doesn’t have a favorite color right now. Sometimes she’ll pick one, like blue or purple, or sometimes she’ll say “I like all the colors.” A child after my own heart.)

crayons

metal

This week’s PhotoHunt theme is “metal.” And as you know, I can take a theme and run with it. Sometimes running with it to such lengths that I cross state boundaries.

So, I’ve run on with my spoon theme. (Be grateful that I wasn’t running with scissors. Because, those are typically metal, too.) I also offer a flashback to last week’s reflection theme.

reflections

This is a photo I took during my 2005 trip to London. We went on an excursion to Bath, and while roaming the streets, I was struck by this shopfront of a frame and mirror store. (Don’t worry, it didn’t hurt me.) A car happened to pass by into the frame (or frames) just as I took the picture.

I’m quite fond of reflected elements in photos and other visual art, so when I saw over at Webs of Significance that this week’s PhotoHunt theme was “reflections,” I felled compelled to investigate further.

So, I’ve decide to give PhotoHunt a try, having seen YTSL (and occasional others) particpate many a time. I saw that you no longer need to post their blogroll, so it seems less cumbersome to participate. In case you haven’t come across it before, PhotoHunt is weekly blogging even hosted by tnchick.com where people are invited to participate by posting a photo once a week on a given theme.

Of course, now that the theme of reflection has come up, I have a few more reflections I’d like to post. I’ll save them for another day. And maybe even a list.
