I had to share these. That’s all.

algumas flores do Brasil (para o Dia das Mães)
Happy Mother’s Day!
I’m here in São Paulo, and am about to head out the door for the last few hours of my visit. I don’t have time to post anything much, as I should probably use my time to see stuff instead of staying inside, tethered to my laptop.
But it’s Mother’s Day, so I’ll mark the day by sharing a few photos with you. These are some flowers that were around in the hotel resort where the conference was held in Campinas. I know that one is a bird of paradise, but I don’t have names for the other two. There’s “the orange one” and “the pink ones.” Can you name those flowers?
Brasil update: algums fotos
Here are (finally) some photos from my arrival. Below you can see some views from my hotel room.
Looking down at the street behind:

Looking across towards a nearby neighborhood:

I’m not sure what these big dirt mounds are, but they were, um, some big dirt mounds:

This photo is not from Brazil, but from JFK airport on Sunday. The flight there was a shuttle (or perhaps shuffle) flight, and we deplaned down to the tarmac. The sunset was improbably dramatic, and the sun was very big and red as it sank behind the skyline. Not surprisingly, the photo doesn’t do it justice:

more than one way to shovel a driveway
It was snowing heavily when I woke up this morning. I’m not sure how many inches accumulated before things turned to rain. Then the sun came out. The result was that by late afternoon, everything was covered with about an inch of very wet, very dense slush-snow. Since John has been sick for the last couple of days with a fever, it was up to me to get the driveway cleared before the inevitable night-time freeze.
If you have ever shoveled slush, you will know that it is very heavy, and slides off the shovel pretty easily. Which made it pretty hard to throw as you might do when shovelling fluffy snow. So I spent a lot of time scraping up a shovel-load of snow, and walking it to the side of the drive to dump it. It was very slow going. After clearing the area in front of our garage, I was mightily bored. So as I worked towards clearing the way up to the street, I got a bit more creative.
Ok, I had a bit of reason for doing this. Namely, I wanted to get up to the mailbox without traipsing through the snow, which can lead to harder shovelling. The side paths were to walk over my shovelfuls. Of course, once I’d started a pattern, I felt like going a bit further with that.
And since I’d bothered to go inside to get my camera, why not go all out?
As I was working on that last bit, a couple of people out for a walk strolled by and said “hello.” I can only wonder what they thought of me.
(Just so you know, I did actually finish clearing the driveway.)

giving a rat’s ass for Valentine’s Day
My suggestion in last week’s rat-themed post (well, my first of several rat-themed posts) that we might like to see a line of greeting cards that make use of the expression “give a rat’s ass” was well received. Therefore, John and I collaborated to bring you these fine greeting cards. (Concept and design by alejna, photo by John, modelling by Phoebe and an Ikea rat.) Feel free to share them with anyone you give a rat’s ass about.
For those of you who would like to express your fondness beyond the Valentine’s holiday season, we have the more general Rat’s Ass version for you:

the Ikea Rat Launcher
From time to time, I have been known to do a product review. (Some of you may remember my review of the iPhone, and the followup discussion of the Apple iCup.) I’ve been wanting to share this product for a while, but thought it would be good to wait for the Year of the the Rat celebrations to kick in. So, here it is: a review and demo of the Ikea Rat Launcher.

The Ikea Rat Launcher
This colorful and inexpensive device can launch an Ikea stuffed rat several feet up into the air, way up over a toddler’s head, resulting in a flying rat and a giggling toddler. (Individual results may vary.) Below are some images from our extensive testing of this product in late October of last year.
For the full demonstration, you can watch this video.¹
This ingenious product also doubles as a storage device: rats can be collected and placed in the launcher for later launching. An attractive reptilian cover keeps the rats from escaping.

Warning: this product is not recommended for toddler storage.
While the Launcher appears large enough to accomodate a toddler, attempts at toddler storage may result in the following:²

¹ Sorry it’s a bit long, at 2:42, but I was too amused by Phoebe’s belly laughter and backwards toddling to cut any of it out.
² This one’s only 15 seconds. You know you want to watch it.
back home and such
We’re back home now, as promised. We pulled into our driveway at around 12:30 Sunday night. We’ve been catching up with various things, such as phone calls and emails. And sleep. I’ve been pretty wiped out, though.
Tomorrow I head into town for my first work meeting of the new year. I don’t really have time to write much, as I have things to do to prepare, and am also going to try to get a workout.
So, I offer up a couple of photos of Phoebe from our travels to illustrate some of the range of emotions she can show.
